La tesi di base di Nicholas Carr in The Shallows è che Internet rende le persone meno intelligenti. Tesi ben argomentata (nei limiti in cui può esserlo una cosa del genere, visto lo stato attuale delle conoscenze), e in molti punti convincente. Tesi perfino vera, forse, per quanto riguarda i singoli individui. Tesi probabilmente sbagliata per quanto riguarda l'assieme della società.
Cosa interessante, Carr si basa molto, per la ricostruzione storica, di due libri di cui ho parlato a lungo anch'io: Space between words di Paul Saenger e Proust and the squid di Maryanne Wolf. Il secondo, perché buona The part of shallows is dedicated to explain the obvious: that the brain of the reader is more accustomed to, ahem, read ... and that, often performing the same activity, we become better at it.
One thing that surprises me, however much, in such books is the lack of references to external pressures. If the Internet makes it very superficial, there should be no great demand for people who do not have been ruined in this way?
